Philip Glass is an American composer and musician born 31 January 1937 in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Amongst others, he studied music with Darius Milhaud and Nadia Boulanger. In 1966 he worked with Ravi Shankar, which changed his perspective on composition. In the fall of 1968, he founded the Philip Glass Ensemble to perform his music and in 1971 he started Chatham Square Production to release his music.
“Available for the first time on vinyl for RSD Drops 2021, The Lost Philip Glass Sessions by The Raybeats is a memento of a singular moment in New York’s cultural history: a time where it felt like anything could happen, and it did. “The Raybeats represented the intersection of multiple streams of creativity, where new music and popular culture were colliding,” says Philip Glass, who joined the band in Green St. Studio along with Michael Riesman and Kurt Munkacsi on June 4th, 1982. “When we think of music and New York of that period, we think of groups like The Raybeats.” The band didn’t know what to expect when they walked into the studio on that fateful day, and they wouldn’t realize what they had until thirty years later. Philip Glass was already amassing an international audience at the time, and his addition to these songs was just another moment of creative spontaneity”.
